Getting back into your artistic practice after years of absence can be daunting.  Coupled with the fear of not being good enough and having to relearn those skills that have become rusty over the years, you tend to feel like being a creative is not what it’s cracked up to be. The joy seems to be gone. Here are a few tips to get you back on track.

  1. Acknowledge your absence and do not expect perfection. Things will not be as they used to be. You will have to continue practicing to get back to the level you used to be at. Accept that and know that it’s okay. You are still an artist.
  2. Create for the purpose of creating only. Meditate while creating and create art that channels your greatest highs or your deepest fears. It’s all up to you what you want to create. Just focus on the process of creation while doing it.
  3. Don’t be afraid to try new materials. Trying new artistic mediums or materials from what you are accustomed to allows your practice to grow and develop in new and interesting ways. Plus, you gain new techniques that you can use in the future.
  4. Experiment and create happy accidents while you work with new materials and develop new processes.
  5. Make creating fun by playing music, creating outdoors in nature, or listening to your favorite podcast while you create. Make the process as enjoyable as possible.

Hope these tips help you to create and develop a thriving practice once more. Remember, you never stop becoming an artist because you put the paintbrush down.
