Gratitude is one of the most powerful aspects of wellness. Some may say that being grateful when there is nothing to be grateful for defeats the purpose of wellness itself. This is because it allows you to tell yourself you’re happy when you’re actually not. However, this is not what gratitude typically means. Gratitude is not just counting your blessings and lucky stars, but understanding that in everything, there is some way the outcome could be far worse. Since life is a process of outcomes, this is empowering, as gratitude helps us to focus on the best and most lasting outcomes.
So what is gratitude?
Gratitude is the acknowledgement of every good, meaningful, and wonderful aspect of daily life. It is the joy of finding simple things to be happy about in adverse and difficult situations where many would struggle to find peace.
How do you practice gratitude daily?
One of the main ways to practice gratitude is to create a list of everything that you have found that has made your life meaningful despite your adverse situation. You can list this in a journal and develop a daily journalling practice that is centered and focused on the topic of gratitude. As you do this take time to know and understand the daily patterns, habits and strategies that you use to develop a sense of peace and wellness.
Other ways to practice gratitude involves art therapy where you can list everything you are good at in concentric circles. This helps and grounds you if you feel lost and have no clue about what you really can do. It also reveals your hidden talents that you can be grateful for.
Another technique involves taking out images of people and places and events that you find beautiful and creating a scrapbook of these things as a form of journalling so that you can look back and see some of the things in your life that you can be happy about and would be happy to look at when you need to feel grateful.
How can we be grateful this Mother’s Day?
For this special occasion, we can be grateful to the mother’s and mother figures in our lives by not only telling them how we feel but also giving a gift and letting them know that they are appreciated and loved deeply in return. For many of us our parents have sacrificed a lot for us just to see us succeed. Letting them take a load of their busy life or just unwind and letting know that they are appreciated and that they deserve peace is more than enough. However, it must noted that Mother’s Day is not the only day we should do so. We should consistently continue to practice our gratitude to them everyday.
